Illustration Friday – 9/02 – Mysterious

I’m trying to keep up, this is the IF topic from Dragon*con weekend, so I didn’t quite finish in time. This is what I think it looks like when you’re actually lucky enough to get a green proto-drake out of the Mysterious Egg. I still haven’t been that lucky yet, but my druid is hopeful.

Illustration Friday – 8/26 – Disguise

Meant to post his yesterday. Last weeks IF topic, disguise. She’s my bear druid. I wanted to do something a bit different than actually being in bear form. :)

Tutorial – Making a Cardstock Jewelry Display Box

Dragon*con is next month and I wanted to put a few tiny pieces of jewelry up on my panel. I have never displayed jewelry at a con before, so I had to figure out how to do it. I thought a kind of shadowbox type display would be neat, but I couldn’t find anything to fit my needs. So I made my own.

Supplies:

At least 3 pieces of 5.5×7.5 Cardstock (Whatever style you prefer.)

Pencil

Straight Edge or Ruler

Ruler or Measuring tape

Exacto Knife

Glue (bottle or stick)

Hole Punch (1/4 inch or big enough for your chain to fit through)

There is a lot of measuring going on, so you can also print out this .pdf onto your cardstock if you like.

1. Take out one piece of 5.5″x7.5″ cardstock. Using your ruler, measure 3/4″ in on each side and make a line. This will be your outside edge fold line. From this line measure 3/4″ in and make a line. This will be the window on the front of the box.

2. Take out your second piece of 5.5″x7.5″ cardstock. Using your ruler, measure 1/8″ in on the top and one of the sides. Draw a line and cut these two pieces off. Your piece of cardstock should now be 4 7/8″ x 6 7/8″ . Now measure in 3/4″ on all sides and make a line. This will be your outside edge fold line for the bottom of the box.

3. Take out our last piece of 5.5″x7.5″ cardstock. Measure 5 13/16″ from the bottom. Make a line and cut off the smaller piece. Then measure 4 3/16″ from either side. Make a line and cut off the smaller piece. On either side measure in 1/4″ and make a line, these will be your folds. The inside piece should measure 3 11/16″. On the top measure in from the fold and down 1/2″ and make a mark. Do this on both sides, this will be where your holes will go for your chain.

4. Grab the cardstock you marked to be the top. You’ll need your exacto knife and a straight edge as well. Cut out the box you made in the middle to make your window. Once you have that done, fold in the sides. Cut a small line at the edges to make the flaps. Glue the flaps inside and the top is done.

5. Grab the cardstock you marked to make the bottom. Fold the sides in. Cut a small line at the edges to make the flaps. Glue the flaps inside and the bottom is done.

6. Grab the cardstock you marked to make the insert. Fold the 1/4″ edges in, so that the insert can stand up. Punch holes in the two places at the top you marked. The insert is done.

7. Your box is done and just need to be assembled. If you have a necklace ready to put in, go ahead and thread the chain through the holes in the insert and clasp it in the back. You may need to secure it in place depending on the type of chain. Once it looks centered, put the insert in the bottom and close the box with the top.

I decided to put a mat on top of my box, which I think give it a little something extra. The finished box came out to 4″x6″ which is about the same size as a standard aceo mat, so it worked out pretty well. I also put the whole box into a clear 5″x7″ bag, so no one can just reach through the window and snatch the jewelry. All it needs from there is something to hang it on the pegboard and you’re good to go.
I don’t usually write tutorials, so I hope this is just a little bit helpful to someone. :)

Deadly Cute

She’s finished. I’m not sure that scanning the painting was the best way to go. The stuff I use for the line work/graffiti is shiny, so the scanner picked that up badly. But scanning issues aside, I’m really happy with it and it’s the first thing I’ve painted/finished in a few years.

Zombie Girl WiP – Painting

Something for Dragon*con XD
And the first thing I’ve actually painted traditionally in quite some time.

Necklaces Yay!

I made a couple of necklaces, which turned out to be kinda fun. I’ve posted these in my Etsy shop, with more to come soon.

Zombie Girl WiP – then and now.

So, a few years ago when I first showed at dragon*con in 2008,I was working on a picture that I didn’t finish. A cute zombie girl with a candy necklace.

I decided I wanted to finish it, but then when I pulled the image up for the first time in a couple of years, I thought the sketch needed some updating. I looked for a stock image that had a pose kind of similar and found the photo by Marcus Ranum (contains mild nudity) Then I redrew her. I think I like it a bit more than the original.

The dark parts are caused by my scanner. :(
